Student arrested at Westville campus for resisting arrest, criminal trespass
PNW student Michael Dowling was arrested on Sept. 15 in the LSF building of the Westville campus by university police and charged by the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s office with resisting arrest and criminal trespassing.
Patricia Nowak, PNW Chief of Police, said Dowling was acting aggressively and was escorted off grounds by university police and was told he was banned from campus because of his disruptive and aggressive behavior. He was informed that if he returned to campus, he would face arrest and criminal charges.
“Shortly thereafter he returned to campus, and when approached by our officers he refused to remove his hands from his pockets as commanded. When the officers attempted to escort him off of campus, he aggressively resisted their attempts,” Nowak said. “The officers advised he was under arrest and eventually he was handcuffed and transported to LaPorte county jail for booking and formal charging.”
Nowak said Sergeant Victor Santiago was the arresting officer along with Lieutenant Terry Scherer. Diana Moryl, assistant director of Student Support and Advocacy, and Jason Wray, Veteran Services Coordinator, were witnesses to the event, along with many students.
The case is pending court disposition. Dowling was released on bond.
