The Math and Stats Club threw a party. You guessed it, they served up plenty of Pi — both the mathematical and the dessert kind.
Organized to make math fun, the club hosted its annual Pi Day celebration last month. The event featured games and giveaways aimed at building a community for students interested in math and statistics.
“This event started last year as an idea from one of our professors,” said Gowrisree Juttiga, president of the Math and Stats Club, a sophomore double majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. “Professor [Bir] Kafle suggested we do something special for Pi Day, and it was a huge success, so we decided to bring it back this year, only bigger.”
Club leaders say the celebration was part of their broader mission to connect students across disciplines and create welcoming spaces to collaborate, de-stress and explore the future. This year’s celebration, held on March 14, featured a math game where students answered questions based on their math proficiency. Correct answers earned them prizes, including pies – the dessert kind.
“It’s all about making math fun and approachable,” said Kseniya Jumazada, the club’s treasurer and a junior in Mechanical Engineering. “We know math can be intimidating for a lot of people. We wanted to create a safe, welcoming space where anyone can participate without feeling judged.”
While many club members are math and statistics majors, the group is open to students from all disciplines.
“Our meetings and events aren’t just for people who love math,” Juttiga said. “We want to connect students from different fields, whether they’re mechanical engineers or business majors.”
The club also has a stress-relief event planned for April 30, just before finals week. Students can stop by the Mane Zone for free coffee and fruit punch as a way to unwind and connect with peers.
For students interested in joining the Math and Stats Club, Juttiga encourages reaching out via email.
“We’re always looking for new members and fresh ideas,” she said. “Whether you’re here to help organize events or just want to meet new people, everyone is welcome.”
