Leo the Lion is officially 8 years old.
PNW’s mascot celebrated his birthday on Sept. 4, 2024, at a special party held in the Mane Zone of the Classroom Office Building (CLO). Attendees got lion plushies and enjoyed cake.
“We actually started planning this back in July,” said Salvador Cordova, assistant director for Student Life. “We were brainstorming ways to engage students early in the semester. Our Executive Director Ronell DuBose casually suggested, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if we did something for Leo’s birthday?’ From there, we ran with it.”
“Leo’s birthday is about more than just celebrating the mascot. It’s a way to welcome our new students and bring returning students together,” he said. “We wanted everyone to feel connected, and Leo’s identity as part of The Pride does just that. Everyone, no matter their major or background, is a part of The Pride.”
Bradley Bieniak, a senior Communications major, is the man in the Leo costume. While Leo does not speak, Bieniak voiced the mascot’s appreciation.
“Leo’s birthday was a lot of fun,” Bieniak said. “It’s always enjoyable doing mascot events, but this one was especially meaningful because it was all about Leo.”
He said one moment was particularly touching: When everyone began singing “Happy Birthday.”
“It was a very emotional moment for Leo,” said Bieniak. “I even pretended to cry to show how much it meant to him.”
The event resonated with Lydia A., a sophomore majoring in Business Management and Marketing.
“The birthday party for Leo was incredible,” she said. “It was clear how much he means to everyone at PNW.
“It was a unique experience seeing Leo as the center of attention, she said. “Most events feature him, but this was all about celebrating him, and it made the occasion feel more personal.”
