Alayna Biro’s most valuable lesson did not come from a textbook.
“I have learned so many new things,” said the senior Behavioral Science major. “However, the most important lesson I’ve learned at PNW is the ability to have empathy.”
Her perspective has been shaped by interactions in a diverse college community that has expanded her view. Throughout her four years, Biro has developed relationships with classmates from different places with different life experiences.
“I have met so many people with different backgrounds and became so open to a variety of perspectives,” said Biro. “Lots of people I’ve met are from other countries, have different ethnicities than me, or even have different gender identities than the binary.”
After listening to and learning from her classmates, Biro said she has come to understand that empathy is more than just a warm feeling.
“You never truly understand someone’s perspective if you are not able to empathize with them and put yourself in their shoes,” she said. “Empathy allows us to grow as people and create a more accepting and supportive environment for everyone, no matter how different we are.”
Biro said empathy is the catalyst for change and the bridge for connecting people across divides. To that end, she has been actively, encouraging others to share their stories and fostering an environment where everyone can feel heard and seen.
“When I interact with other people, I always tell myself to have empathy and encourage others to open up about who they are,” she said. “I want everyone to feel that their voice matters.”
Through her actions and experiences, Biro has felt her empathy deepened and strengthened.
“Empathy has taught me so many new things and I know I will carry this lesson on and encourage others to express empathy as well,” she said.
