Caprice Pryor’s special talent is urban farming.
“I wouldn’t really call it a secret because I’m overly vocal about the hobby if someone asks me,” said Pryor, a junior Construction Engineering Management major. “I… assume people who first meet me wouldn’t think I’d be an urban farmer.
“It’s not a hobby many people my age get into,” he said.
Pryor started urban farming shortly after purchasing his first house in 2021.
“I had an abundance of unutilized backyard space and my wife’s great-grandfather encouraged … me to start gardening in that space, he said. “After some instruction from him and a couple dozen YouTube university videos…I was able to start my farming career.
“I considered my urban farming to be a unique talent, because I’m the only person in my family who grows crops,” said Pryor. “I try to encourage my friends and family to start growing their own produce as well.”
Pryor enjoys growing various fruits and vegetables in his garden.
“I put my own twist on urban farming by growing non-native crops in my climate region as well,” he said. “I find this very challenging and unique.”
This year Pryor is extremely excited to take his urban farming to the next level.
Pryor said his special talent actually fuels his other secret passion: cooking.
“I really enjoy seeing a recipe and creating whatever it is that I’m reading or watching,” he said “I like to put my own twist on the recipe by adding spice or sweetness to any type of different style to the dish to see if I can enhance it.
“Cooking is probably my second favorite secret talent if I had to say,” he said.
