Charlie Skube is hoping to spend spring break making some money.
“The past two spring breaks I have been picking up work,” said Skube, a Biology major. “It’s been satisfying financially, but I haven’t been able to focus on self-care or the things I enjoy.”
Still, spring break offers important earning opportunities.
“I’m graduating soon so I’m trying to be very mindful of my money and save every cent I can,” she said. “If I can pick up more hours, it’ll be more rewarding in the long run… I’ll be rejuvenated with money.”
Money is not the only thing on Skube’s mind. She is also hoping spring break offers opportunities to take care of herself.
“We need to clean the whole house, do laundry, do some self-care,” she said. “Self-care to me is my 50-step shower-hygiene-cleaning routine. [I] shower…clean…water the plants. Then [I] go to bed for a really long time.”
But, most of all, Skube wants to take advantage of the break to regain control of her life.
A self-described type-A personality, she said she prefers “having control over things… being the boss in any situation, taking the lead on things and having an orderly lifestyle. Everything in its place … clean, perfect, amazing.”
But Skube admits she cannot always maintain this orderly lifestyle. Like other students, she struggles with procrastination and deadlines. Spring break provides an opportunity to alleviate these concerns.
“There’s more leniency in spring break,” she said. “Winter, Thanksgiving, and fall breaks are all focused on the holidays and family. Spring break doesn’t really have that obligation.”
