Gabis Arboretum offers more than nature walks as university adds events, activities
PNW’s Gabis Arboretum is more than just a place to go for a walk in the woods.
The 300-acre nature preserve near Valparaiso offers a variety of classes, concerts and other events to entice both the PNW community and surrounding residents.
“We’re heavy on incorporating all kinds of things when it comes to nature,” said Yvonne Lopez, the arboretum’s events and programs coordinator. “We kind of just collaborate with each other on what would be cool to bring out, what’s been done in the past, and then reach out to different folks in the community.”
One of the arboretum’s most popular attractions is the Stargazing Program, during which students and community residents can join PNW astronomers for an evening of viewing the stars.
“It’s a great site to set up our small telescopes,” said Adam Rengstorf, an associate professor of Physics and Astronomy. “Very little light pollution and wide-open space to get a clear view of the sky.”
Admission and programs not requiring a ticket are always free to PNW students with a student ID. The public can purchase arboretum memberships, which allow members to visit as often as they wish and receive discounts on programs that require a fee.
“I believe the Arboretum is an incredible gift to students and all who visit it,” said Kayla Vasilko, a student working towards her Masters in Communication. “It is always important to have places like Gabis to re-center and reconnect, especially when times become stressful.”
“Gabis has remained a special place for my family and for others that I’ve met there,” said Aaron Warren, a PNW Associate Professor of Physics. “It’s a place where the everyday world can be set aside for a bit to enjoy nature, both earthly and celestial.”
Those interested in exploring all that’s offered can visit the Gabis Arboretum Events Archive on the PNW website to view rates, purchase tickets and/or register.
