Halfway through its indoor season, the track and field team feels like it has turned the corner.
“Going into this season, we didn’t have high hopes because we had new coaches,” said Sara McGraw, a junior Psychology major who runs 800 meters. “Luckily, things are going very well.” “We’ve had many school records, [personal records] and even fewer injuries. It’s just the start, but I think we are all pleasantly surprised with how it’s turned out so far.”
One of the biggest moments of the season came Jan. 10, during the Lewis Duel, where the team had several major accomplishments.
“We had seven school records, 10 top-three performances and 18 top-ten performances just in one weekend,” she said. “It really showed us what this team is capable of.”
McGraw believes the biggest reason for the team’s improvement has been the culture created by the new coaching staff and returning athletes. She said communication has improved, and the team feels closer than ever.
“The most significant aspect … this year has been its culture,” she said. “The coaching staff and returning athletes deserve a lot of credit for how connected we are. Everyone supports one another whether they win or lose, and the instructors are more like helpful friends than intimidating individuals.”
McGraw said the team is still improving, but the pieces are falling into place, thanks to the spirit of camaraderie.
“Even if there are difficult days, the team always strives to stay positive. It’s normal for bad things to spread sometimes,” she said. “But we try to give our teammates time to be mad before we tell them to take a positive view.”
“Changing everything was difficult at first, but it’s been the best change,” she said. “Trust is the biggest piece of advice I would give to an athlete. … Trust yourself, your training and your coaches because they are doing everything they can to help you succeed.”
