Though some people were disappointed over the choice of Bad Bunny to headline Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime, many students were convinced to watch by a teaser.
Bad Bunny, the Grammy-winning Puerto Rican rapper, singer and occasional actor, released a teaser featuring his hit song “BAILE INoLVIDABLE” that showed him dancing with a variety of people.
“It made me excited for the Super Bowl more than I already was,” said Alyssa Abila, a sophomore Nursing major.
The teaser also resonated with Marlene Bazalda, a sophomore Business major.
“That song is called ‘BAILE INoLVIDABLE,’ and that just means, like, unforgettable dance,” she said. “I liked how each person was dancing differently, with different diversity and he was, like, matching how they were dancing.”
The NFL’s choice of performer faced backlash as Bad Bunny has been critical of both Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and the Trump administration. As a result, Turning Point USA organized its own alternative halftime show featuring Kid Rock, which was broadcast on Turning Point USA’s YouTube Channel, X account and Rumble.
However, Bad Bunny did not bother some students. Bella Mata, a freshman Business Marketing major, said he was the perfect halftime show pick, given all that is occurring in the country.
“[With] everything happening with immigration … it was kind of like a ‘wow’ factor … for it to be a Hispanic influence as part of the biggest United States sports game,” she said.
Some students said they understood the criticism.
Katie Kruse, a junior Computer Engineering major, said that, while she likes Bad Bunny, she believes there were better choices.
“I don’t agree with the last couple years [of halftime shows],” she said. “I feel like it’s all been pretty much, like rap or R&B. … I like that music but I feel it’s not very diverse. They could have picked a rock band.”
[In] the last five years, it’s been minority people, which I don’t have a problem with. But I also feel like it should be fair play for everybody, you know?”
