The university will honor three alums and a former head coach as the newest members of the
PNW Athletic Hall of Fame.
They will join nearly 100 alumni inducted into the Hall since 2006.
“The Hall of Fame … is a representation of excellence of our athletes and faculty,” said Rick Costello, PNW’s athletic director. “It fosters a sense of community and connection among our fans, athletic department and parents.”
Inductee Sergio Reyes is proud to be honored.
“The Hall of Fame is important because it represents the legacy, dedication and achievements of athletes who have given their all to their sport and their school,” said Reyes, who played soccer while earning his Civil Engineering degree. “Being inducted … is a true honor, and I feel incredibly humbled to be recognized by the institution that I admire so much and that gave me so much in return.”
Other members of this year’s Hall of Fame inductees are Miguel David, who graduated in 20’18 and also played Men’s Soccer; Gabrielle Martin, who graduated in 20’18 and played Volleyball, and Gary Hayes, who was head coach of Men and Women’s Basketball from 1995 to 2004 at Purdue Calumet, one of the schools that was merged to form PNW in 2016.
Hall of Fame nominees are selected by a committee of former student-athletes, former coaches and administrators. The committee meets annually.
“Each nominee must have graduated from Purdue University Northwest or have served the athletic department in an exceptional capacity for an extended period of time,” said Costello.
After finishing his student-athlete career in 2017, Reyes served as a student assistant soccer coach while he completed his master’s degree from PNW. Since then, he has worked at Lipper Components in Goshen, Indiana. The company produces engineered components for manufacturers of recreational vehicles, automobiles, watercraft and prefab homes.
He said lessons he learned on and off the field have stuck with him.
“I learned the importance of serving my team and community with dedication,” he said. “PNW Athletics fosters values like strength, respect, integrity, and determination, and those principles were instrumental in my growth. They shaped me as a functional individual who aims to make a positive impact in every endeavor. In short, PNW Athletics … helped define the person I am today.”
