Programs offers leadership skills training to local resident

PNW’s Leadership Northwest Indiana program wants to help area residents seeking to improve their leadership skills.

The university created the program to offer mentoring and management training to area residents. It is designed as an intuitive experience that encourages one-on-one interaction.

The Leadership Institute was created with the goal of leadership development and support. Mentorship is an area the organization specializes in – something much needed for those who find themselves without proper guidance.

The program spans 10 months and is offered along with the university’s Young Leadership Academy, Explorer Academy and the Leadership in Action speaker series. These programs were originally held in person before the COVID-19 pandemic but have shifted to online following the lockdown.

Some of the program’s details include one-on-one recording sessions, personalized emails containing links to extra resources and other related information.

The organization is comprised of leadership experts and practitioners, who help identify areas of improvement participants need to make.

“Leadership is like a muscle that needs to be worked,” said  Shelia Matias, the institute’s executive director. “It’s using proven skills and techniques; it’s life experience. It’s making mistakes and learning from them.”

She said employers are increasingly looking for leadership skills in young adults.

The Leadership Institute is here to help anyone looking to improve their leadership and management skills. With its resources it vows to birth new leaders in the Northwest Indiana region.
