When it comes to planning the perfect date, Hector Cabera has it down to a science — and a bit of suspense.
A second-year graduate student, Cabera’s perfect date begins in the car. He said the drive sets the tone for the night, giving both him and his date time to talk, get comfortable and share music.
“Music tells you a lot about a person,” he said.
From there, the date moves to the movie theater.
“I’d go see a psychological thriller,” Cabera said. “Somewhere with seats that recline. I want to be able to comfort my date during the scary parts.”
The genre is intentional. Cabrera said psychological thrillers create just enough tension to spark conversation afterward, while the recliner seating makes the theater feel cozy. The goal he explains, is connection — shared reactions, laughter and maybe a few jump scares along the way.
After the movie, the night shifts from suspense to flavor. Cabera’s restaurant of choice is Output Lounge & Sports Bar in Chicago, a spot he says stands out for its wings.
“They are crispy, flavorful and huge,” he said. “I like to get either chipotle ranch or lemon pepper.”
For Cabera, food is an essential part of the experience — something memorable that adds personality to the date.
However, no date night is complete without dessert. To end the evening on a sweet note, Cabera suggests a stop at either Crumbl Cookies or Insomnia Cookies.
“It’s just a good vibe,” he said.
