A campus organization is actively working to help women get ahead in business and life.
Women in Business is a women-lead organization that seeks to empower women. It offers female students and professionals a chance to share experiences, find support and develop plans for the future.
“We call ourselves a network for women on the rise, focusing on women empowerment and professionalism in the workplace,” said April Roberts, a PNW senior majoring in Finance and Accounting, who is the group’s president.
WIB helps to prepare women for the workplace by focusing on soft skills, like how to carry themselves when they start a career and how to network.
“We talk about the language that women use and being aware of the things that we say and how it may put us down without us even realizing it,” said Roberts.
“For example, instead of saying ‘I’m sorry that I’m late’, you can say ‘Thank you for waiting’ when you are meeting someone,” she said. “Women shouldn’t say sorry for everything, especially when it’s not their fault.”
The organization hosts guest speakers from the business world, to help members meet working professionals and develop networking skills. The group recently hosted an executive from Starbucks.
WIB has also organized activities to give back to the community.
“This past month, we partnered with the Finance and Accounting Club for a food drive and [collected] over 150 items,” said Roberts. “We also made dog toys out of old t-shirts and donated them to the Humane Society.”
