While most students look forward to a relaxing winter break, Quetzali Concha will worry about her father working to rebuild storm-ravaged Acapulco.
Category 5 Hurricane Otis made landfall in Mexico on Oct. 25, destroying 120 hospitals and clinics, knocking out power throughout the region, and leaving thousands homeless and without utilities. At least 48 people were killed, according to the Mexican government. More than 1,600 people remain in shelters.
“Having no water, power, and resources … [has led some residents] to loot, steal and rob,” said Concha. “I am very worried for my father … and I just want him to be safe.”
Concha’s father Jose, a heavy equipment operator, left for Acapulco last week. He will spend two weeks helping with disaster relief efforts.
