InterVarsity aims to create a community for students
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship wants to convert students and provide them with a community when they feel alone.
“Our vision is seeking Jesus’ renewal at every corner,” said PNW’s InterVarsity campus staff member, Morgan Folgers. “We aim to develop students’ faith through Jesus and be a part of a community that will embrace them.
“We are also a space for those that do not have a Christian background,” she said.
The group welcomes students from all backgrounds.
“We have a lot of students leading events that are actively walking with Jesus, but we also have students that are not … but want to be a part of a group,” said Folgers. “Our ministry (also) has students that represent other religions.”
The national organization, founded in 1941, claims chapters on nearly 700 campuses and reports that it reached nearly 49,000 students in the last school year. At PNW, the group has about 50 members, though some activities have attracted up to 100.
“We exist to bring Jesus back to campuses,” she said. “There is a plethora of people that long and thirst for hope, and Intervarsity exists to provide that hope.”
Folgers believes that the message of Jesus is a great segue to making an impact.
“We are a commuter campus and outreach is a wonderful way to build relationships,” she said. “We build crucial relationships on campus through table events, and we tie it with Jesus.
“We have seen the conversations lead to attendance, but the impact goes beyond just numbers at events,” she said. “I want people to know that if they feel alone or disconnected, InterVarsity is there for them. Above all Jesus is there for them.
“The struggles of life do not need to be fought alone,” she said. “This community wants to help them. I want people to know that Intervarsity is a place for students to come.”
